Born in Evangelismos, Larisa, in 1967, he studied Archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki before undertaking postgraduate studies in Folklore and Social Anthropology at the same institution and Paul Valéry University, Montpellier, France (Post-graduate Diploma, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki 1994, supervised by Nora Skouteri-Didaskalou) and in Ethnology and Social Anthropology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris (D.E.A. 1994, Ph.D. 1999 supervised by Marie-Elisabeth Handman).

A Research Director at the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre (HFRC), Academy of Athens, where he serves since 2002. Acting Director since 2014. His regular work at the HFRC includes the recording and evaluating of the manuscripts and other ethnographic material entering the Archive on an annual basis and editing publications and the Annual of the HFRC. His fieldwork has been focused in the areas of Aspropotamos (Depart. Trikala), Grevena and Lefkada island but also in Larissa (Thessaly), Andros (Cyclades) and Crimea. He has worked for the documentation and digitization of folklore museum material. Responsible for the Centre building, he also sits on its committees. He has organised the digitization of the Folklore Archive and the creation of digital applications and of the Centre’s website within the framework of the “Developing a National Documentation Centre for Popular Culture” project (2004-2008), part of the Information Society Operational Programme (scient. respons. Aik. Polymerou-Kamilaki). Scientific responsible of the edition project and series "Sources of popular culture" and the Annual of the HFRC (2014-present). Scientific responsible of the research programme “National Network for the Documentation of Tangible and Intangible Heritage” (2014-2015) in the framework of the Operational Programme “Digital Convergence” during which the electronic equipment of the Centre was fully renewed and digital repositories of folklore and collections were created. Scientific responsible of "Digitization of analog sound folklore material" programme (2019) and "Digitization of manuscript and printed folklore material: programme (2019-2020). Member of the Scientific Council of the Research Centres of the Academy of Athens (2017, two terms). Member of the Committee for the promotion and strengthening of Greek Handicrafts (2020) and the National Scientific Committee for the implementation of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2020). Member of the Executive Board of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore – SIEF (2021, 1st term). Member of the General Assembly of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) (2021).

He supervises internship of university students at the HFRC. He teaches special subjects of folklore and ethnology at the National Centre for Public Administration and Self-Government (Institute of Training - INEP). He has participated in the writing of teaching books (INEP, 2017) and the Institute for Lifelong Learning of Adults, (IDEKE, 2008). He also teaches for many years, on a voluntary basis, in Open Universities. He has supervised the dissertation of doctoral thesis as a member of committees. He is a reviewer of scientific proposals/programs, and an evaluator of the academic work of researchers and University staff members.

In the past, he has served as Secretary of the Fondation Hellénique de la Cité Universitaire Internationale de Paris (1999). He taught “Anthropology of Food”, with an emphasis on the traditional Greek diet, at Harokopion University, Athens (Nutrition and Dietetics Department, 2004-2007). He has supervised Ph.D. students as a member of thesis committees.

He publishes texts in widely circulated journals and newspapers and participates in television and radio broadcasts with folklore themes. He collaborates with television and radio programs on folklore and ethnology related subjects. He collaborates in a regular, voluntary basis with the Church of Greece radio station where he was co-presenting the Folklore Centre’s hourly “Folklore Pages” program, with the former Centre’s director, Aikaterini Polymerou-Kamilaki, for three years (2006-2009). General Secretary of the Historical and Folklore Society of Thessaly, member of the the Hellenic Folklore Society, the Greek Ethnology Society, the Eurethno Network and the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore (SIEF). Military service: The Hellenic Army.

His academic interests include material culture, traditional diet and techniques, local identity, popular worship, digital cultural repository management.
